Once the urgent repairs are complete we will have a better perspective to evaluate the conditions. That gives us time to investigate cost effective solutions. Your collaborative input will be very helpful at this point.

PLANS FOR CONSIDERATION:

IMPACT OF THREE
DOWNHILL DRIVEWAYS

If the 26G rip rap runaround from urgent repairs is not a lasting solution, a culvert pipe will need to be placed in the hillside ditch to allow water to continue flowing and provide access.

An18' diameter pipe will require excavation of a deeper ditch to bury it in.

A. RIP IT OUT COMPLETELY grade and compact  to out-slope. Everyone who is asked about that patch says the same thing, "What if it's there for a reason?"

Monitor the conditions for impact and resurface the area if needed.

B. EXTEND THE PATCH across the road. This requires preparation, framing area for poured concrete. New concrete does not bond with old so significant cracks will appear. Once the road is widened we may find that extending all the way across is more concrete than is already there.

C. RIP IT OUT & CREATE A NEW PATCH  since the prep is the same for extending as it is for a new pour, just more concrete, create a better area with a water bar across the top and an outlet at the bottom. Consider asphalt instead of concrete. One is cheaper, the other lasts longer.

A large area of rip rap at the start of the road that collects mud and disperses water. Periodically the collected sediment may need clearing out.

NOTE: the public road culvert is under the purview of Dept of Public Works and is currently clogged.

Every winter, after the storm season, the road will undergo maintenance to repair damage.

Every summer there will be maintenance to clear bush from road sides and open outlets in preparation for the coming rains.

This plan was created by Jeff Bateman, local survey engineer with ‘The Green Piece’. It follows exactly every item of the Horsley-Witten Guide. That makes it both interesting and not actionable. While it does not have any costs or timing included, it is safe to say it is a million dollar plan that would easily take a year or more to execute. Moreover, the road would need to be periodically closed down for heavy construction. We will not be going ahead with this approach. The Premium Plan is amazing and available here for anyone who wants to geek out on it:

This plan was developed in coordination with the Horsley-Witten Group. They have expertise in storm water management.
